Local Resources
Charleston, South Carolina
Why is Charleston so beloved by all? Here are my thoughts on this great old city. Sandy
Authenticity. Charleston was built here in the late 1600’s and has been an authentic working port city with great tragedies and has survived. After the Civil War, which destroyed some of the city, there was a hurricane, an earthquake and a fire that burned 1,500 frame homes. Charlestonians were “too poor to paint, too proud to whitewash” so the city sat in disrepair, but the old Charlestonians held onto their beautiful furnishings.. Two things happened simultaneously that saved our historic buildings. The First World War brought economic recovery and we developed the first preservation society so many of our buildings were preserved. Then Hugo, which caused damage to downtown Charleston brought insurance resources and really cleaned up the city! http://www.sciway.net/city/history/charleston.html www.preservationsociety.org www.nps.gov/fosu/historyculture/fort_moultrie.htm
Location. On the edge of the semi-tropical zone, this city is surrounded by thousands of acres of marshes, creeks, five rivers, lakes, the Intracoastal Waterway, Atlantic Ocean and one of the deepest harbors on the southeast coast. The sun comes up over the Atlantic and sets over the rivers. Our weather is lovely…mild winters and moderate weather most of the time…with very warm weather in July and August. Fabulous lightening storms over North Charleston and the Atlantic but storms seem to blow through Charleston quickly. We have fabulous sunrises and sunsets…mild winds are constant around the waterways, and our semi tropical weather is lovely. I have served New Years lunch on our screened porch for the past five years…until the cold and unusual 2009! http://www.sciway.net/maps/charleston-sc-maps.html
Friendly People. Our creed here seems to be ‘live and let live’. People are kind and forgiving. I think it is because people here are happy and feel lucky to be here. Even in traffic people are polite…and if someone is not, you always guess that they are not from here and have not become adapted yet to our fair city. http://www.travelandleisure.com/afc/2007/category/1/subcategory/3
Wildlife. Fabulous bird watching prevails. We are in the fly zone of migrating birds and surrounded by Cape Romain wildlife preserve, the Francis Marion forest, Sewee…and so many more estuaries and preserved green spaces. The marshes are the incubator for life…the beginning of the food chain. We have had swarms of bluebirds, redbirds, painted buntings, three varieties of woodpeckers, egrets, great blue herons, hawks, owls and hundreds of other birds in our yards in the ten years we have been here. Pelicans and porpoises are everywhere..we see them on every boating trip. There are two bird rookeries in the harbor! You see trees full of egrets on every creek. Deer visit our yards…the wildlife is just magnificent and accessible. http://www.thecenterforbirdsofprey.org/ www.crbo.net/Charleston.html www.crbo.net/ http://www.camacdonald.com/birding/ussouthcarolina.htm
Beaches & Parks Accessible Our beaches are accessible and public, except for a few…but tucked away so they do not dominate our city. There is a county park at the beach at Isle of Palms. City, county and federal boat docks… parks, beaches, piers, marinas, forts, etc give our citizens tremendous access…and usually no cost! There are bicycle and jogging trails all over Charleston County and on our bridges for beautiful views! www.charlestoncounty.org http://www.ccprc.com/index.aspx?NID=8
Boating There are so many rivers and our waterways are never crowded…very few ‘no wake’ zones so you can really enjoy the harbor, five inland rivers , numerous lakes, hundreds of creeks and the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing and water sports prevail and there are numerous county boat launch areas with docks and parking with no fees. Blessings of the Fleets, boat festivals and boat parades abound! www.charlestonfishing.com www.dnr.sc.gov
